8. Pacing and pace control

Summary

Pacing is an underrated skill both as a racing and training technique. Use a pace clock, watch or waterproof metronome to help improve your pace awareness and practise swimming at different speeds. You should be able to develop a strong sense of your speed and effort levels, and how far you can swim at a particular speed. Training at different speeds is important to develop different fitness systems. Occasionally try swimming extra slowly to improve your control.
